Are there any new upcoming requirements or standards for LTE 5G devices that are compatible with PROFINET?
PROFINET is an Ethernet-based industrial communication standard.
We are working together with the 5G-ACIA and 3gpp on the integration of native Ethernet into the 5G system.
Many topics are already covered by the Rel18/Rel19/Rel20 discussion.
Some examples are
- Support of IEEE802.1ASdm for synchronization
- Support of c-VLAN component model for virtual bridges
o VLANs
o Eight queues
o Strict priority
- Support for topology discovery model
- Support Netconf/YANG based configuration model for virtual bridge
These are topics that are required by 5G-ACIA and 3gpp!
If you only want to offer a 5G router for use with PROFINET - not covering the above list - for today's PROFINET networks, then make sure that you can transport Layer2 frames, e.g. by offering a tunneling solution.
If your goal is only vertical communication / an engineering or diagnostic tool interface, then Layer3 support seems to be sufficient.
