PROFIsafe and Security

Questions from the PROFIsafe Designer Workshop in October 2023:

As long as there is no security in the safe fieldbus protocol, the only solution security-wise is to isolate the devices in the network. Is there a plan to solve this by integrating real security (perhaps as an optional feature) into PROFIsafe?

Security is handled in the underlying communication channel ("black channel"). This means that all security features that exist for PROFINET today (and further features that will be implemented in the future) can be "used" by PROFIsafe.

This separation makes the PROFIsafe protocol stable, while allowing state-of-the-art security features which are implemented in the underlying black channel and are updated if needed.

As stated in the workshop, which security features are needed shall be assessed by appropriate means as described in the relevant security standards; typically a Threat & Risk Analysis (TRA) is being performed.
